PlanMonthlyAnnualWhat you get
Free $0 $0 Unlimited quick searches, a limited number of Pro searches a day, the default model, file upload with limits. No API.
Pro $20 $200 ($16.67 / month) Hundreds of Pro searches a day, choice of frontier models (Claude, GPT, Gemini, Sonar), unlimited file uploads, Spaces, image generation, and a monthly API credit allowance.
Max $200 Everything in Pro with unlimited access to the most capable models, early access to new features, Labs for long multi-step projects, and priority support.
Enterprise Pro About $40 / seat Custom Pro for teams with SSO, admin controls, data retention settings, and no training on your data. Contact sales for larger seats.

Pro includes a monthly API credit allowance for the Sonar API, which is easy to miss. If you only need light programmatic access, that allowance may be enough without a separate API bill.

Every legitimate way to get Perplexity Pro free

Perplexity has grown largely through distribution deals, which means most free-Pro routes are partner promotions with their own eligibility and end dates. Here is the full list of routes that have existed, in rough order of how many people they cover. Check each one before relying on it.

1. Student and campus offers

Perplexity has run free Pro for students with a verified university email, sometimes as a fixed number of months and sometimes as a campus-wide unlock once enough students from one university sign up. If you have a .edu (or equivalent) address, this is the first thing to check. Details in our student programs hub.

2. Carrier and telecom bundles

Mobile and broadband providers in several countries have bundled a year of Pro with certain plans: examples have included Xfinity in the US, Deutsche Telekom in Europe, Airtel in India and SoftBank in Japan. If you are a customer, look for a Perplexity perk in your provider's rewards or app.

3. Bank, payment and device partnerships

PayPal and Venmo, Revolut, and Samsung Galaxy devices have each offered a free year or free months of Pro to their users. These are usually claimed through the partner's app with a promo link.

4. Referrals

Pro subscribers have been able to earn a free month for each friend who signs up, up to a cap. This one stacks with the others and is the only route that renews.

5. Bundled with other subscriptions

Perplexity has appeared as a benefit in some premium credit cards and software bundles. Worth a search of any bundle you already pay for.

What does not work: shared accounts (they get suspended), resold "lifetime" keys, and promo codes from random websites, which are almost always expired or fake.

Is Perplexity Pro worth $20 if you can't get it free?

For most people, the free tier answers the question of whether Perplexity fits how they work, and the daily Pro-search cap is the thing that eventually pushes them to pay. Pro is worth it if you:

  • Do research daily and want the frontier models with citations rather than the default model.
  • Upload a lot of documents. Unlimited file analysis is a Pro feature.
  • Use the API lightly. The monthly credit allowance included with Pro can cover a small integration.

Max at $200 is for people who run Labs projects and want the heaviest models without limits, which is a small group. Compare it against Claude Max at the same price before deciding; they solve different problems.

For founders

How startups get Perplexity free

If you are building a product, a free Pro seat is a rounding error. What matters is the Perplexity for Startups program, which gives eligible early-stage companies API credits for the Sonar models (Perplexity's search-grounded LLM API). Our listing shows $5,000 in credits; the program has at times also included Enterprise Pro seats for the team.

The fine print

Eligibility has typically required a real company with a website, an early funding stage, and in some periods a referral from a partner VC or accelerator. The application is a short form. Our Perplexity for Startups page has the current requirements and common rejection reasons.

Sonar credits cover search-grounded answers inside your product. They do not cover the general-purpose reasoning most products also need, so pair them with Claude for Startups or OpenAI for Startups for the model that does the thinking, and use Sonar for the part that needs live web citations.

Perplexity for Startups

Up to $5,000

  • 6 months of Enterprise Pro (up to 50 seats) + $5,000 in API credits

Step by step: claiming free Perplexity Pro, then the startup credits

Do the personal routes first (they take minutes), then the startup program if you are building something.

  1. 1

    Check your student email

If you have a university address, look for the current student offer on Perplexity's site or help center before anything else. It is the most reliable free route.
  2. 2

Check the apps you already pay for

Open your mobile carrier, bank, and payment apps and search for Perplexity in the rewards or perks section. Partner offers are claimed through the partner, not through Perplexity.
  3. 3

    Use referrals to extend it

Once you have Pro, share your referral link. Each successful referral has earned a free month, and this stacks on top of a partner offer.
  4. 4

Apply for Perplexity for Startups if you are building

Go to perplexity.ai/startups with a company email, your website, and a description of how search fits your product. Our program page covers eligibility.
  5. 5

Pair Sonar credits with a general model on credits

Apply for Claude or OpenAI startup credits for reasoning, and use Sonar only where you need live cited web results. Both programs are self-serve.

Free vs Pro vs partner offer vs startup program: the math

For a two-founder startup where one founder does research daily and the product uses search-grounded answers.

RouteYear-one costWhat it coversWhere it breaks
Free tier $0 Quick searches, a few Pro searches a day Daily cap and default model only. No API.
Pro x2 (annual) $400 Full Pro for both founders, small API allowance Product API usage beyond the allowance is billed separately.
Pro via partner offer $0 for the promotional period Same as Pro Ends after the partner's term; renews at $20 a month.
Perplexity for Startups + one Pro seat About $200 plus $0 API usage until credits run out Product on Sonar credits, one founder on Pro Credits expire and cover Sonar only.

The last row is the right answer for most funded startups: one paid Pro seat (or a partner offer), and the product on startup credits.

Questions founders ask

How much is Perplexity Pro?

How can I get Perplexity Pro for free?
Through partners rather than Perplexity itself: student offers with a verified university email, bundles from mobile carriers and broadband providers, promotions from banks, payment apps and phone makers, and the referral program, which earns a free month per friend. Which offers are live changes often, so check each partner's app.
Is there a Perplexity student discount?
Perplexity has run free Pro offers for students with a verified university email, including campus-wide unlocks. The exact offer changes by term and region; check Perplexity's student page or help center for what is currently available.
Does Perplexity have a startup program?
Yes. Perplexity for Startups gives eligible early-stage companies API credits for the Sonar models (our listing shows $5,000), and at times Enterprise Pro seats. Apply at perplexity.ai/startups with a company email and website.
Does Perplexity Pro include API access?
Pro includes a monthly credit allowance for the Sonar API, which covers light programmatic use. Heavier usage is billed at API rates or covered by Perplexity for Startups credits.
What is the difference between Perplexity Pro and Max?
Max includes everything in Pro with unlimited access to the most capable models, Labs for long multi-step projects, early access to new features and priority support, at $200 a month. Pro at $20 is enough for daily research with frontier models.
Can I share a Perplexity Pro account?
No. Perplexity suspends shared accounts. Use Enterprise Pro for a team, or get each person their own seat through a student or partner offer.
