What the Claude Free plan is actually good for
For a lot of people, Free is enough. Anthropic moved most of the headline features into the $0 tier, so the difference between Free and Pro is now mostly about volume and the pro tools rather than capability.
Free works well for
- Writing and editing. Drafting, rewriting, summarizing documents you upload. Extended thinking is on, so quality is the same as Pro for a given model.
- Research with sources. Web search is included, so you get cited answers rather than model memory.
- Light coding. Generating a function, debugging a snippet, explaining a stack trace. Code execution means Claude can run what it writes.
- Trying connectors. Slack, Google Workspace and desktop extensions are all on Free, which is unusual.
Where Free stops
- The usage cap. This is the real limit. The allowance resets on a rolling window and a long document session or a burst of coding questions can exhaust it. You then wait for the reset.
- No Claude Code. The terminal agent that edits your repo is Pro and up. If you searched "is Claude free" because you want Claude Code, the answer is no. See Claude Code pricing.
- No Research, no unlimited projects. Deep multi-source reports and organized workspaces are paid features.
- Fewer models. Free gets the default model; Pro adds the rest of the lineup.
Claude Free vs Pro: is the $20 worth it?
Pro is worth it if either of these is true.
You hit the Free limit more than once a week. Pro's allowance is described as "more usage" rather than a fixed multiple, and in practice it moves the ceiling from an afternoon of heavy use to a full working day for most people. On annual billing it is $17 a month, less than a single API-billed day of Claude Code.
You want Claude Code. Pro is the cheapest plan that includes it. If you then find yourself waiting on limits, Max 5x at $100 is the next step; Max 20x at $200 is where full-time Claude Code users end up.
Pro is not worth it if you use Claude a few times a week for writing and questions. The Free plan already has the features that matter for that, and you can upgrade the month you need more.
Is there a Claude free trial of Pro?
Anthropic does not advertise a Pro trial on its pricing page. The Free plan is the trial. Team plans are self-serve, so a company can start one and cancel, but that is a paid month, not a trial.
Every way to get Claude free or with free credits
"Free Claude credits" usually means API credits, which are separate from the chat plans. Here is every route Anthropic actually offers, and who it is for.
| Route | Who qualifies | What you get | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Anyone | Chat, search, memory, code execution at $0 | Usage cap, no Claude Code |
| New API account credit | Anyone who signs up for the Claude Console | A small amount of free API credit to test with | Enough for an afternoon, not a project |
| Claude for Startups | Companies founded in the last four years, no prior Anthropic credits | Free API credits, highest rate limits, early access, Claude Code and Cowork access | First-party API only. Larger tiers need institutional or partner-VC backing |
| Cloud startup credits | Startups on AWS Activate, Google Cloud, Microsoft for Startups | Claude usage on Bedrock, Vertex AI or Foundry billed to credits | Not the claude.ai app; cloud rates apply |
| Team Plan for Scientists | Scientists at academic and nonprofit research institutions | Claude at no cost to start | Institutional, not individual |
| Education plan | Universities buying campus-wide | Discounted access for students, faculty and staff plus API credits | Your school has to buy it; no individual student discount |
| Academic and research discounts | Researchers, case by case | Reduced API pricing | Negotiated, not self-serve |
What does not exist: a Claude Pro student discount, a Pro free trial, or a promo code. Anyone selling "Claude Pro free" is reselling a shared account against Anthropic's terms. Students should read our Claude student discount guide for the routes that work.
For founders
How startups get Claude free
If you are building a company, the Free plan is the wrong thing to be asking about. What you want is Claude for Startups: free Claude API credits, Anthropic's highest rate limits, early access to model launches, and access to Claude Code, the Claude API, Claude Managed Agents and Claude Cowork.
The fine print
The requirements are short. Your company must have been founded within the last four years and must not have received Anthropic startup credits before. Equity funding from institutional investors, or backing by an Anthropic partner VC or accelerator, unlocks the larger credit allocations. The application at claude.com/programs/startups asks for a Claude Console account, a company email, your website and a brief description of what you are building. Anthropic says it takes about two minutes.
The credits apply to the first-party API through the Claude Console. They do not cover Bedrock, Vertex AI or Foundry, and they do not make a Pro or Max subscription free. When they run out, standard API pricing kicks in automatically.

Step by step: from the Free plan to free Claude credits
Start on Free, prove the use case, then move the real usage to credits.
-
1
Prototype on the Free plan
Use chat, web search and code execution to validate what you want Claude to do. Free is capable enough to test prompts and workflows before you spend anything. -
2
Open a Claude Console account on your company domain
Go to platform.claude.com and sign up with a work email. New accounts get a small free API credit. Follow our guide to getting an Anthropic API key to set up keys and spend limits. -
3
Apply to Claude for Startups
Submit the form at claude.com/programs/startups. Be specific about how Claude is central to the product; vague "we use AI" applications get the smallest allocations. Eligibility details and common rejection reasons are on our Anthropic program page. -
4
Add a Pro or Max seat for interactive work
Credits cover the API. For each founder who wants Claude Code in the terminal day to day, a Pro ($20) or Max ($100) subscription is cheaper than burning credits on typing speed. -
5
Stack cloud credits for overflow
When Anthropic's credits run low, route inference through Bedrock or Vertex AI and let AWS Activate or Google Cloud startup credits pick up the bill.
