Claude Student Discount 2026: What Students Actually Get
Searches for a Claude student discount usually end at a promo code that does not exist. This is the honest version: what Anthropic offers students and universities in 2026, how to get it, and the one route that gets a student founder Claude for free.
What Claude costs students in 2026
These are the plans on claude.com/pricing. There is no student column because there is no student price.
| Route | Price to a student | How you get it | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Free | $0 | Sign up at claude.ai | Chat on web, desktop and mobile, code generation, web search, memory, file creation, code execution, connectors, extended thinking. Usage capped on a rolling window. |
| Claude Pro | $20/month ($17 annual) | Same as everyone else | More usage, Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science, unlimited projects, Research, additional models. No student discount. |
| Claude for Education | Set by your university, often free to students | Your institution signs an agreement with Anthropic | Institution-wide access for students, faculty and staff at discounted rates, with API credits and education features. |
| Team plan for scientists | $0 to start | Researchers at academic and nonprofit research institutions apply | A Claude Team plan at no cost to start, aimed at research groups. Students do not apply individually; the lab or PI does. |
| Claude API (Console) | Small free credit, then per-token | Create a Console account | Enough free credit to test the API. After that, Sonnet 5 is $2 input / $10 output per million tokens. Full rates on our Claude pricing page. |
| Claude for Startups | $0 API credits | Incorporate, then apply at claude.com/programs/startups | Free API credits, highest rate limits, early access to launches. Open to companies founded within the last four years. |
The Max plans ($100 and $200 a month) and Team plans ($25 and $125 per seat) also have no student pricing. If you need Claude Code heavily as a student, the Pro plan at $17 annual is the cheapest entry that includes it.
Why there is no Claude student discount, and why that might change
Anthropic's consumer plans are priced flat. Free is genuinely free and includes features that were paid a year ago (web search, memory, file creation, code execution). Pro is one price worldwide, and the annual option is the only discount on it. Anthropic's education strategy runs through institutions instead: it sells a campus-wide Education plan and works with universities directly, rather than verifying millions of individual students.
That is a different model from GitHub or JetBrains, which verify students one at a time. So the question to ask is not "does Anthropic have a student discount" but "does my university have Claude for Education." If it does, you likely get Claude at no cost through your school login. If not, you are on the Free plan or paying Pro like everyone else.
Could this change? Anthropic has expanded the Free plan repeatedly and signs new institutions on a rolling basis. If a direct student offer appears, it will show on claude.com/pricing, and we re-check that page monthly. Until then, treat any "Claude student promo code" as unverified.
Claude for Education: what it is and how students get it
Claude for Education is Anthropic's institution-wide plan. According to claude.com/solutions/education, it is "a comprehensive university-wide plan for institutions, including its students, faculty, and staff." The pricing page adds that it comes with dedicated API credits and educational features, at discounted rates for the institution.
Three groups are named on the page: faculty (course materials, syllabi and assignment design), researchers (literature analysis, methodology and dataset interpretation, plus the Claude Science app) and administrators (policy drafting, communications and budgets, with institutional compliance controls). Students get access through the same agreement.
How students get it
You do not apply. Your university does. If your school has the plan, you sign in with your institutional account and Claude is already there. If you are not sure, ask your IT help desk, library, or the office that handles software licensing whether the university has a Claude for Education agreement.
How to get your university to buy it
Universities buy tools when someone with budget asks. Anthropic's page says to "contact our Education team" rather than offering self-serve signup, so a named champion matters.

The Free plan is better than most students expect
Before paying, be honest about what you need. For essays, problem sets, reading summaries and debugging a few hundred lines of code, Free is enough. For an all-day agentic coding session, it is not.

Building something? Skip the student discount and apply as a startup
If your student project is on its way to being a company, the discount question is the wrong one. Claude for Startups gives early-stage companies free Claude API credits, Anthropic's highest rate limits, early access to model launches, and access to Claude Code, the API, Managed Agents and Cowork. The requirements on claude.com/programs/startups are that you are an early-stage founder, the company was founded within the last four years, and you have not received Anthropic startup credits before. Nothing about student status.
The fine print
The application is a two-minute form: a Claude Console account on your company email, a website, and a short description of what you are building. Companies with institutional investors or backing from an Anthropic partner VC or accelerator qualify for the larger allocations. Partner-referred startups listed on our Anthropic program page have reported credits from $25,000 upward.
Two constraints to plan around. The credits work only on the first-party Claude API through the Console, not through AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. And when they run out, standard per-token pricing starts automatically, so model your costs from our Claude pricing table before you burn through them.
Claude for Startups
Up to $100,000
- $25,000 to $100,000+ in Claude API credits (partner tier)
- Priority rate limits and early access to new models

Step by step: getting Claude as a student in 2026
Work through these in order. Most students stop at step two. Student founders should go all the way to step five.
-
1
Check whether your university has Claude for Education
Ask IT, the library, or your department. Try signing in at claude.ai with your institutional Google or Microsoft account; if your school has an agreement, you may land in the campus workspace. If yes, you are done and it costs you nothing. -
2
Use the Free plan for everything it covers
Sign up at claude.ai with a personal email you will keep after graduation. Turn on memory and connectors. Free covers chat, search, files and code execution, which is most coursework. -
3
Decide whether you actually need Pro
Pro exists for Claude Code, unlimited projects, Research and more usage. If you are coding all day, the $17 annual price is the cheapest way in and there is no student rate to wait for. If not, stay on Free. -
4
For projects that call the API, open a Console account
Go to platform.claude.com, create an account on your school email, and use the small free starting credit to test. Haiku 4.5 at $1 per million input tokens is the budget model for class projects. -
5
If it is becoming a company, incorporate and apply to Claude for Startups
Register the company (Stripe Atlas is the usual route for student founders), set up a company email and website, then submit the form at claude.com/programs/startups. Ask any accelerator or investor you have whether they are an Anthropic partner; it raises the credit tier. Our application guide walks through the form.
