Claude Cowork in 2026: What It Does, Which Plans Include It, and What It Costs
Cowork is Claude working through your files and tools on its own and handing back finished work. Here is what it does, which plans get it, how much usage it eats, and what changed when Anthropic folded it into regular Claude in September.
What Claude Cowork actually does
In regular chat, Claude answers your messages but cannot touch your files. In Cowork, you give Claude permission to read, edit and create files in folders you choose, connect it to the tools you already use, and let it work through a multi-step task while you do something else.
Anthropic's own examples are the kind of work that eats an afternoon: building a weekly report from several sources, reconciling spreadsheets, reviewing a stack of contracts, or pulling themes out of call notes. What you get back is a real file, such as an Excel workbook with working formulas or a PowerPoint deck, not a chat reply you have to copy out.
The features that make it useful:
- Folder access. Point it at a working folder. It asks before permanently deleting anything.
- Connectors. Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Slack, Amplitude and other services.
- Plugins. Bundles of skills, connectors and sub-agents for a job, such as Legal, Finance or Brand Voice. Admins can run a private plugin marketplace.
- Scheduled tasks. Type
/scheduleto set up recurring work. Scheduled tasks run in the cloud, so your computer does not need to be on. - A built-in browser and computer use. The desktop app can browse for you. Computer use, where Claude operates apps on your screen, is still a research preview.
- Phone hand-off. Start or assign a task from the mobile app and pick up the result on desktop.
Which Claude plans include Cowork
Every paid plan includes Cowork. What changes between plans is how much usage you get. Prices from claude.com/pricing and the Cowork product page.
| Plan | Price | Cowork? | Usage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No | Not available | Trying Claude chat |
| Pro | $20/mo ($17 annual) | Yes | Shared Pro allowance. Cowork uses it faster than chat. | A few delegated tasks a week |
| Max 5x | $100/mo | Yes | 5x the Pro allowance | Daily delegated work |
| Max 20x | $200/mo | Yes | 20x the Pro allowance | Running Cowork most of the day |
| Team Standard | $25/seat ($20 annual) | Yes | Standard seat allowance, shared with chat and Claude Code | Teams of 2 to 150 |
| Team Premium | $125/seat ($100 annual) | Yes | 5x a Standard seat | Heavy users on a company plan |
| Enterprise | $20/seat + usage | Yes | Seat plus usage at API rates | Admin controls, compliance, cloud deployment |
Enterprise can also run Cowork on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry, which bills the usage to that cloud account.
How Cowork uses your plan allowance
Cowork does not have its own quota. It draws from the same allowance as chat and Claude Code on your plan. Anthropic is direct about the cost: Cowork "consumes limits faster than Chat", because every step of an agentic task uses tokens.
Anthropic does not publish a per-task figure, so the practical guidance is:
- Long, open-ended tasks cost the most. Narrow the goal and point Cowork at one folder rather than your whole drive.
- Auto permission mode uses more. Auto runs a safety check on each action, which adds usage. Manual mode, the default, asks you to approve actions instead.
- Pro runs out quickly on heavy use. If you hand off work most days, Max 5x is the usual next step.
During the merge rollout Anthropic notes that usage "may be measured slightly differently", so expect some movement in how far your allowance goes this autumn.
Cowork is merging into regular Claude
On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude. The Cowork product page now reads "Claude Cowork is now just Claude." In the merged experience there is no separate Cowork mode: you describe what you want in any conversation, and Claude decides whether it needs a quick answer or a full task with files and tools.
What that means in practice:
- Pro and Max get it first. The rollout started in September and runs over several weeks. Team and Free plans follow, and Enterprise gets at least 30 days' notice.
- Tasks are moving to the cloud. From October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run on Anthropic's servers and the "Only on your computer" setting goes away. If your work has to stay on your machine, Anthropic points you to Claude Code desktop instead.
- Memory already spans both. Since August, chat and Cowork share memory, so the merge mostly removes the mode switch.
Anthropic has said the merged experience will reach Free users, but not whether Free will get Cowork's agent features. Until it does, plan on a paid plan.
Cowork vs Claude chat vs Claude Code
All three run on the same Claude models and the same plan allowance. They differ in what Claude is allowed to touch and who they are built for.
| Claude chat | Claude Cowork | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built for | Questions, writing, analysis in the conversation | Multi-step knowledge work: research, documents, spreadsheets | Software engineering |
| Works with your files | Uploads only | Reads, edits and creates files in folders you choose | Reads and edits your codebase, runs commands |
| Where it runs | Web, desktop, mobile | Desktop app, web and mobile (beta), Claude in Chrome | Terminal, desktop app, IDEs |
| Output | Chat replies and artifacts | Finished files: reports, workbooks, decks | Code changes, commits, pull requests |
| Free plan | Yes | No | No |
See Claude Code pricing for how the coding agent is billed, including the API route.
Is Claude Cowork free? Student and discount options
No. Anthropic lists Cowork as available on paid plans only (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise), and there is no Cowork free trial.
There is also no individual student discount on Cowork or on the Claude plans that include it. The routes that do exist:
- Claude for Education. Universities can buy an institution-wide plan at discounted rates, and Anthropic's education page lists Cowork among its products. Whether you get Cowork depends on what your university has set up. Our Claude student discount guide covers how to check.
- Team plan for scientists. Researchers at academic and nonprofit institutions can start free through Anthropic's science program.
- Annual billing. Pro drops from $20 to $17 a month and Team Standard from $25 to $20 a seat when paid yearly. Max is monthly only.
For founders
Cowork for startups
Anthropic's Claude for Startups program lists Cowork alongside the Claude API, Claude Code and Managed Agents as products it supports. The program gives early-stage, venture-backed companies free API credits and priority rate limits.
The fine print
Be precise about what that covers. Startup credits are API credits. Nothing on the program page says they pay for a Pro, Max or Team subscription, which is where Cowork usage normally sits. The sensible setup for a small team is:
Our Anthropic program page has the eligibility rules and the application steps. If you are on Enterprise and running Cowork through Bedrock or Google Cloud, AWS Activate and Google Cloud for Startups credits apply to that usage.
Claude for Startups
Up to $100,000
- $25,000 to $100,000+ in Claude API credits (partner tier)

How to start using Cowork
You need a paid plan. Everything else takes a few minutes.
-
1
Upgrade to a paid plan
Pro is enough to try it. Team admins can turn Cowork on or off for the organization in Admin Settings. -
2
Install Claude Desktop
Download from claude.com/download. It runs on macOS 11+, Windows 10+ (x64 and arm64), and Ubuntu 22.04+ or Debian 12+ (Linux is in beta). You can also start tasks from claude.ai or the mobile app, but local folders and the browser need the desktop app. -
3
Start a task
Select Cowork in the message box and describe the outcome you want. If you already have the merged experience, just describe the task in any conversation. Review the plan Claude proposes before it runs. -
4
Connect a folder and your tools
Give Cowork one dedicated working folder rather than your whole drive. Add services like Google Drive or Slack under Customize > Connectors. -
5
Schedule anything recurring
Use/schedulefor weekly reports and other repeat jobs. Scheduled tasks run in the cloud, so they finish even with your laptop closed.
Safety: what Anthropic tells you to watch
Anthropic says plainly that Cowork "has unique risks due to its agentic nature and internet access." The main one is prompt injection: a web page, email or document containing instructions that try to redirect Claude. Anthropic trains against it and scans untrusted content, but says the chance of an attack is "still non-zero." Its own advice:
- Use a dedicated working folder, keep backups, and do not give Cowork access to sensitive files.
- Only allow websites you trust, and do not use the browser for sensitive actions like banking.
- Be careful with unfamiliar plugins and MCP servers, which can run locally with full permissions.
- Do not schedule tasks that send messages, make purchases or touch sensitive files.
Cloud sessions process your files on Anthropic's servers in an isolated environment for each session, and deleted tasks are removed from storage within 30 days.
